An interview with Halle Tecco, founder of Yoga BearAn interview with Halle Tecco, founder of Yoga Bear
What gave you the idea to start Yoga Bear and how did you get the concept off the ground?

I became interested in 'alternative' medicine in college, when I was interning at Columbia Hospital on a project that focused on music therapy. I continued to explore how alternative therapy could benefit those in pain, and researched yoga, music, foreign language, and many other unique approaches to healing.

It was a few years later, when I was on the mat, that I decided to actually do something. The class was only 75% full and I began to think, "there's someone out there who would love to be in this class, who would truly benefit from this class, and it would cost this studio nothing to bring that person in". From there, I got a few yoga studios signed up, formed a 501(c)3 and we've been growing ever since.

Do you practice Yoga? If so, how has Yoga impacted your life?

I do practice, and have been practicing for 8 or so years. I'm a busy person, and I thrive off of challenging situations and juggling many tasks. Yoga gives me an opportunity to slow down for a while, and become introspective. It helps me realign my values and how I want to spend my short time here on earth.

What do you look for in a Yoga studio that wishes to donate its services?

We look for studios who are committed to giving back to the community. It's also great if they have classes of all levels, because many of our participants are beginners. However, we always find a great match for the studio based on their offerings.

Are the Yoga classes available for both adults and children who are cancer survivors?

Our participants are 18+ years old.

Where do you see Yoga Bear in 5 years?

In five years, I can imagine Yoga Bear expanding our reach to those with other illnesses-- from HIV/ADS to heart disease. Yoga studios would be able to opt-in to which types of participants they wish to sponsor. In addition, I envision us partnering with many more hospitals to bring yoga to people there.

What brings you the most personal fulfillment from having founded Yoga Bear?

Hearing from our participants that our program has made a difference in their life!
