Marlize Joubert Passionate About Yoga

Marlize Joubert

Marlize Joubert is a native South African who grew up in the Capital of South Africa called Pretoria near Johannesburg.

Q: How did you become interested in practicing Yoga?

A: I was traveling around the world looking to find myself and to become a better person. Years later after I tried many avenues, I realized in Yoga that you don't find something outside yourself to make you happy, and you don't become a better person.

What you are looking for, pure love, is inside of you all along. You just peal off the layers of your being to get to the diamond. Along in my travels I discovered the practice of Qi Gong, which I studied for about 3 years. I knew that Yoga would be a great fit.

Q: What Yoga teachers inspire you and why?

A: About 5 years ago I discovered Ish Moran at Maha Yoga in Brentwood. That is where it all started for me. Little did I know that it will eventually transform my life.

After that I ventured over to Exhale, Center for Sacred Movement, and discovered Saul David Raye who is a phenominal spirit and a very gifted teacher. Because of him I chose to pursue a career as a yoga teacher.

He exudes truth and beauty with the words that he shares with his class, during asana practice. People literally hang on his every word. He brings a liquid energy to the practice and it is a lovely experience.

A Glimpse Into Robert Sturman Creating Photographic Masterpieces

Robert Sturman

Robert Sturman loves his work.. and who wouldn't? He is immersed in the beautiful yoga community where he is interacting and creating with yogi's every day. What began as a volunteer job with Yogi Times has turned into a huge following of yogi's contacting Sturman to create his magic as he formulates each picture into a work of art. His pictures of the yogi's translate how that person is feeling as they are immersed in a pose..

It is amazing how one event can shape a person's life. For Sturman that event was the gift of a camera at age 14. Sturman studied art at the University of Santa Cruz and the famed art school in Memphis under many world renowned masters. Sturman began traveling the world after art school where his creativity blossomed from the beauty around him. The focus and knowledge that he gleaned from his travels helped shape the artist that he is today.

Robert Sturman ventured back to California to pursue his dream of becoming a thriving artist in the local community. His wish was to become the opposite of the typical artist and live life and live it to it's fullest capacity. His wish to live a healing life lead him on his path to the world of yoga. Sturman was doing some yogi profiles and was getting to know his subjects well immersing himself in the yoga community and all the goodness it had to offer him. Yogi's flocked to his studio to have their pictures taken similar to Degas and his ballerinas.

Sturman earned the honor of being Visual Artist of the year for the Grammy Awards as well.

The technique that Sturman employs is unique as he takes a polaroid picture and before it dries he manipulates the image to create light, shadows, depth and so much more.

"Your life is your masterpiece. You have the ability to mold your life into something fantastic. I am creating the yoga of my own life and a composition of my own life". These are definitely words to live and be inspired by.

Doce Vida Fitness Tip

We'd like to offer our thoughts on how to experience a fascinating down dog.

We offer these tips for you to use, or not...Keep in mind:

1. The center of this pose is the pelvis 2. Move the crease between your torso and thighs (basically the groin area) away from your wrists 3. With each exhale breath move groin back and away from torso 4. Move torso towards legs 5. Think about the thighs rolling in - inner thighs rolling back 6. Do not retract head into the neck...keep the neck long 7. Press your heels 8. Spread your toes 9. Make your legs feel springy 10.While settling into the pose don't grip the floor, instead try to lengthen your arms and press into the hands mindfully - think extend through the elbows 11.Move your mid-spine deeper into your back 12.Inhale...elongate...

Halle Tecco and Yoga Bear.org Giving Yoga to Cancer Survivors

yogabear.org Q: What gave you the idea to start Yoga Bear and how did you get the concept off the ground?

A: I became interested in 'alternative' medicine in college, when I was interning at Columbia Hospital on a project that focused on music therapy.

I continued to explore how alternative therapy could benefit those in pain, and researched yoga, music, foreign language, and many other unique approaches to healing.

It was a few years later, when I was on the mat, that I decided to actually do something. The class was only 75% full and I began to think, "there's someone out there who would love to be in this class, who would truly benefit from this class, and it would cost this studio nothing to bring that person in".

Q: Do you practice Yoga? If so, how has Yoga impacted your life?

A: I do practice, and have been practicing for 8 or so years. I'm a busy person, and I thrive off of challenging situations and juggling many tasks. Yoga gives me an opportunity to slow down for a while, and become introspective. It helps me realign my values and how I want to spend my short time here on earth.

Q: What do you look for in a Yoga studio that wishes to donate its services?

A: We look for studios who are committed to giving back to the community. It's also great if they have classes of all levels, because many of our participants are beginners. However, we always find a great match for the studio based on their offerings.

Q:Where do you see Yoga Bear in 5 years?

A: In five years, I can imagine Yoga Bear expanding our reach to those with other illnesses-- from HIV/ADS to heart disease. Yoga studios would be able to opt-in to which types of participants they wish to sponsor. In addition, I envision us partnering with many more hospitals to bring yoga to people there.
